 NRM Internal Dynamics to Shape 2026 General Election: Mao

In a recent interview, Minister Norbert Mao, President General of the Democratic Party (DP) and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, shared his insights on the upcoming 2026 general election in Uganda. According to Mao, the internal dynamics within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party will significantly shape the outcome of the election.

Mao predicts that the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a faction within NRM led by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, will dominate the parliamentary electoral contest. He believes that PLU-leaning candidates will challenge NRM secretariat-favored candidates in the primaries and general elections.

This internal contestation within NRM could lead to a shift in the political landscape, potentially altering the balance of power within the party. Mao's prediction suggests that PLU's rise might challenge traditional NRM strongholds, creating new dynamics in the election.

Mao's comments also imply that opposition parties might face difficulties in mounting an effective challenge against NRM, given the internal dynamics at play. With 15 months left before the election, it remains to be seen how these internal dynamics will unfold and impact the outcome of the polls.
