Ouma Patrick, Aspiring MP for Samia Bugwe Central Constituency 2026, Calls for Recognition of Former IGP Benjamin Othieno

Samia Bugwe,  boasts a rich history of producing notable sons and daughters who have made significant contributions to our nation. However, despite their achievements, many of these individuals remain unsung heroes, forgotten by their own community.

A case in point is former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benjamin Othieno, a distinguished son of Samia Bugwe from Buhasaba-Buhehe sub-county. IGP Othieno dedicated his life to serving our nation, leading the police force from 1971 to 1973. During his tenure, he faced the daunting challenge of preserving the integrity and duty of the police as the military increasingly usurped their mandate in dealing with public issues.

Despite this treacherous landscape, IGP Othieno remained steadfast in his commitment to upholding the law and protecting the citizens. His leadership and resolve ensured that the police force maintained its independence and continued to serve the nation with integrity.

Yet, despite his remarkable achievements, IGP Othieno remains a forgotten figure in his own community. No monuments, no roads, no buildings bear his name. No scholarships, no community programs, no initiatives have been established to honor his legacy.

This is a travesty. Samia Bugwe must do better to honor its sons and daughters who have made a mark on our nation. We must recognize their contributions, celebrate their achievements, and inspire future generations to follow in their footsteps.

Therefore, we urge our elders and leaders to consider requesting the President to honor former IGP late Benjamin Othieno with the recognition he deserves. Let his name be immortalized in a police station, community center, hospital, skills center, or scholarship fund. Alternatively, a considerable number of youths from Buhehe-Buhasaba, where he was born, be given the opportunity to serve in the police force every intake.

It is time for Samia Bugwe to remember its forgotten heroes. Let us come together to celebrate their achievements and inspire future generations.
